The lesson on Enriching Classroom Play through Play Materials was a creative and meaningful learning experience that helped me understand how play materials can support children’s learning and development. It was different from an ordinary classroom lesson because we were able to actively participate in hands-on activities and experience how simple materials can become powerful tools for learning. Through this lesson, I learned that play materials do not need to be expensive or complex; even natural and found materials can create meaningful opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and exploration.

The first activity, which was creating a play autobiography story, was very interesting and personal for me. I used a water bottle filled with water to represent my clear emotions and memories of childhood. I chose this material because the transparency of water symbolized honesty, peace, and the simple happiness I experienced during childhood play. It reminded me of how childhood emotions are often pure and genuine. Sharing my representation with others made me reflect on how play helps children express emotions and experiences in ways that words sometimes cannot. This activity helped me understand that materials can be used not only for play but also as tools for self-expression and reflection.

The lesson also helped me connect play materials to the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, and Montessori. I learned that Piaget believed children learn through active exploration, so materials should encourage discovery and experimentation. Vygotsky emphasized social interaction and collaboration, showing that materials should support communication and shared learning. Montessori highlighted the importance of carefully designed hands-on materials that allow children to learn independently. These theories helped me understand that play materials should always be selected with purpose to support children’s development.

One of the most enjoyable activities was when we went outside to collect natural play materials and create a rhyme. My group explored the outdoor environment and collected leaves, branches, twigs, and flowers. We used these materials as props and wore them to represent diversity and uniqueness. Our rhyme was “We All Are Different,” which carried the message that every child is unique and special in their own way. This activity was meaningful because it showed how natural materials can inspire creativity and teach important values such as acceptance, respect, and inclusion. Working together to create the rhyme also strengthened teamwork and communication skills. It made me realize that outdoor learning experiences can be engaging and meaningful while encouraging children to connect with nature.
